Art Therapy is the use of art materials as a means of creative self expression, with the intention of understanding one’s self and to be understood by another. The art therapist forms a relationship with clients as they make art and explore the meaning of the art piece. This process enables clients to express and to reflect on thoughts and feelings. It empowers clients that feel ambivalence or feel difficulty speaking about life experiences. Engagement with art materials enables clients to symbolically address life experiences that can be difficult to articulate.

The art therapist has knowledge of many directives that can support the client’s needs. However, clients are always encouraged to work spontaneously. Creating artwork spontaneously extends the possibilities to address current concerns and feelings. The different art materials used in the sessions can include: drawing, watercolour paint, acrylic paint, clay, plaster, photography and collage.

A speech-language pathologist (S-LP) helps others with their functional communication and swallowing needs. Sometimes injury, illness, disability, or other personal experiences can result in speech, language, and/or swallowing difficulties that affect quality of life. An S-LP can help with this by administering comprehensive, evidence-based assessment and treatment services. Through collaboration and client-centered care, an S-LP can identify personal goals that are both relevant and functional. This can help minimize barriers, improve quality of life, and maximize communication and/or swallowing effectiveness based on an individual’s strengths and needs.
There are many different areas an S-LP can help someone with. These might include (but are not limited to) stuttering/disfluency; transgender/gender affirming voice services; voice and/or resonance disorders; swallowing difficulties/dysphagia; communication difficulties related to neurogenic diseases, disorders, or accidents (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injury); supportive communication strategies for families.
